We’re showcasing two incredibly talented writers: Ed Lin and Shawna Yang Ryan, as they present their recently released new books, INCENSED and GREEN ISLAND, respectively. Join us for a special reading and lively panel talk about Taiwan in the Trump Era, moderated by Professor Jack Tchen. Afterwards we’ll have an intimate reception where you can personally chat with the writers and get copies of their books signed.

JACK TCHEN is the founding director of the Asian/Pacific/American (A/P/A) Studies Program & Institute at New York University & part of the original founding faculty of the Depart. of Social & Cultural Analysis, NYU, where he currently still teaches. Jack co-founded the Museum of Chinese in America in 1979-80. He is the author of several books on Chinatown, including “New York before Chinatown: Orientalism and the Shaping of American Culture, 1776-1882” & “Genthe’s Photographs of San Francisco’s Old Chinatown, 1895-1905.” He is the co-author of “Yellow Peril! An Archive of Anti-Asian Fear.”

- On Monday, September 12, 2016, Lost Lit can’t wait to host a Brooklyn Book Festival BookEnd Event! Leland Cheuk (Writer), Emi Ikkanda (Senior Editor at Spiegel & Grau), Marie Myung-Ok Lee (Writer) and Ayesha Pande (Literary Agent of Ayesha Pande Literary), with Ed Lin (Writer) moderating, will give a panel talk on the topic of Asian Americans in publishing. They will tackle the question of invisibility, how positive stereotypes like the model minority are still harmful and who is supporting who when it comes to Asian American stories.

MARIE MYUNG-OK LEE is an acclaimed Korean-American writer and author of the novel Somebody’s Daughter. Her next novel, on the future of medicine, is forthcoming with Simon & Schuster. Essays have appeared in The New York Times, Slate, The Guardian, The Nation, Salon, and she is a regular contributor to The Atlantic. She was the first recipient of a creative writing Fulbright Fellowship to South Korea and has won the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts fiction fellowship and the Richard Margolis award for social justice reporting. Born in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. and raised in Apopka, Florida, NICOLE SEALEY is the author of The Animal After Whom Other Animals Are Named, winner of the 2015 Drinking Gourd Chapbook Poetry Prize. Her other honors include an Elizabeth George Foundation Grant, the Stanley Kunitz Memorial Prize from The American Poetry Review, a Daniel Varoujan Award and the Poetry International Prize, as well as fellowships from CantoMundo, Cave Canem and the Poetry Project. Her work has appeared in Best New Poets, Copper Nickel, Ploughshares, Third Coast, and elsewhere. Named one of the “100 Most Influential People in Brooklyn Culture” by Brooklyn Magazine JASON KOO is the author of two collections of poetry, America’s Favorite Poem (C&R Press, 2014) and Man on Extremely Small Island (C&R Press, 2009). He is also the editor of Poems for Kobe, a private limited edition of poems presented as a retirement gift to Kobe Bryant by the Brooklyn Nets and Brooklyn Poets, and coeditor of the forthcoming Bettering American Poetry anthology and Brooklyn Poets Anthology. An assistant teaching professor of English at Quinnipiac University, Koo is the founder and executive director of Brooklyn Poets and creator of the Bridge. He lives in Brooklyn.

JESSICA ESPINOZA lives in Jackson Heights, Queens. She is a graduate of Hunter College and Long Island University. Currently, she teaches science at Middle School 217 in Jamaica, Queens. Jessica is cofounder of the Jasper Collective and has read for the Unpublished reading series. Her narratives include themes of immigration, feminism, gender, sexuality, and education. She likes whiskey and reading aloud to her students, not at the same time, of course.
STEPHANIE JIMENEZ is a Queens-based writer and former Fulbright
recipient who currently works in publishing. She runs the Young to
Publishing Writers Committee and is cofounder of the Jasper Collective.
She has just finished writing her first book-length manuscript.

JESSICA LANAY currently lives in Bronx, NY and works at a magazine for writers in Manhattan. She moved to the city from Macon, Georgia and was raised in different places throughout the South. Themes that trickle through her poetry and short stories are female protagonists, internal migrations, and the investigation of violence, disappearance (of landscape or persons), and magic realism.
